Meet the Creators
Designed and developed by three passionate industry professionals, every aspect of the Art of Sierra project has been meticulously crafted - much like the adventure games themselves. For Brandon Klassen, Eriq Chang, and Brad Herbert, Sierra games went beyond entertainment - the company's culture, artistry, and values have profoundly influenced their choices and decisions, touching both their lives and their careers. For over a decade, the Art of Sierra team has remained close to the studio's artists and designers, working side-by-side with talented Sierra alumni including Space Quest creators Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, Quest for Glory's Lori & Corey Cole, Jane Jensen, the designer of Gabriel Knight, and many more.
Also a constant source of inspiration, the team has worked tirelessly within the adventure game community - on archival efforts with Ken Williams' Sierra Gamers, Mike Marecek's YCBSRSLY! Show, Rudy Marchant's The Sierra Chest, and on the development of new adventures with companies like AGD Interactive, Phoenix Online, and Infamous Quests.
A collaboration of the best kind, the team's combined industry experience and life-long passion will result in a rich, memorable preservation event filled with the same love and attention to detail Sierra was famous for - a project that reciprocates the storytelling excitement pioneered by Ken and Roberta Williams.

Brandon is the Art of Sierra's archivist, curating the treasured artifacts of yesteryear's adventure games with a passion for preservation. Residing close to Vancouver, BC in Canada and while working by day as a graphic designer, Brandon has pursued many freelance media interests, providing music reviews for national and international media outlets, interviewing legends in the comic book industry such as Jeff Smith, and working as a project leader with Sierra remake studio AGDI. These freelance pursuits have given him a wealth of industry experience in fields from game development to publishing.
His love for gaming has continued beyond the Sierra and LucasArts adventures of his childhood, and he's created extensive sites showcasing art and game data from Skyrim, Tomb Raider and the BioShock series, which have been frequented by almost 1 million
visitors. He's now preparing to launch a museum website dedicated to celebrating the art of computer games, as a permanent library of artwork, behind the scenes materials and much more.
Brandon is currently the VP of Publishing for Publishing 180, which includes the role of Creative Director for Babylon 5 Books, where Brandon works for writer/producer J. Michael Straczynski. Babylon 5 Books has published over 40 books dedicated to the behind the scenes making of nineties sci-fi television series Babylon 5 and its spin-off, Crusade.

Artist Eriq Chang has collaborated with some of the most creative people in the world. His body of work includes art direction and design, cutting-edge interactive, and a wide range of memorable projects for some of the world’s most exciting brands - including Disney, Microsoft, and LucasArts Entertainment. Eriq’s highly focused skillset combines meticulous, experiential concept design with a passion for interactive entertainment and print... especially packaging and promotional material that reminds him of the great Sierra days.
A die-hard fan of sci-fi and horror, Eriq’s most recent work on the “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise with Warner Bros. has the artist creating fiery designs in collaboration with FX artist Anders Eriksen, film director Christopher Johnson, and "Freddy Krueger"
star, Robert Englund. Nightmare Gloves, like the Art of Sierra project, was born out of pure love for the craft.
When Eriq finds time, which isn't as often as he'd like in the last few years, he enjoys cataloguing and studying his graphic adventure game collection, pouring through Sierra's InterAction magazine, and working on various gaming projects... not much has changed since he was 11 years old.

I have carried my Sierra games and magazines everywhere with me... all through my life. And I am so excited to finally share my experiences and craft with the people who inspired me.”

Brad Herbert is a freelance Director of Photography and Motion Graphics Designer based in Dallas, Texas. His passion for evoking emotion in his work can no doubt be attributed in large part to his fascination with the Sierra adventures of his childhood. Growing up, Sierra's magical artwork, paired with creative storytelling and problem-solving made a lasting impression on Brad as his creative drive flourished.
Brad's motion graphics experience has him busy working with a range of clients from Fortune 500 companies to toy studios. Also amongst Brad's clientele are projects for high profile directors and athletes, major television shows and commercials, theatrical releases, and a myriad of content for charitable organizations - his cinematography talents are in constant demand both locally and abroad.
Brad is currently partnered with Dallas-based animation and visual effects studio Element X as Senior Creative Director. His body of work continues to expand as he applies his talents to the motion picture industry. His approach is methodical and organized - and always with an air of adventure-game magic... his work is filled with unique touches inspired by Sierra’s artistry.
When not obsessing over design and balance, Brad spends time with his wife Amanda, and daughters Brooklyn and Sierra in their North Dallas suburban home. Yes, he named his daughter Sierra. Of course!

John Williams was employee number 3 at Sierra On-Line, Inc. and worked for the company for over 20 years. His career with the company began as a sales person representing the company’s games selling “door to door” to computer retailers all over the Midwest and south east though he soon moved to Sierra’s Coarsegold California facility. (John actually briefly owned the home with the industry famous Sierra address on Mudge Ranch Rd. in Coarsegold, CA and also the hot tub where the cover for Sierra’s infamous adventure game “Softporn” was photographed.)
John Williams was the steward of Sierra’s InterAction Magazine from the genesis of the publication as an eight page black and white newsletter through the growth to the million plus circulation news magazine it would become. He also ran the company websites and multiplayer gaming portals, and was the self-styled
"company historian," providing background trivia and information for game series compilations and re-issues.
Today John lives in rural Issaquah WA on a small farm with his wife of 30 years and two daughters.
Oh, and he’s Ken’s brother.

Here's a visual way to think of the book we're creating together - it's the mid-90s… and you have an all-access pass inside Sierra's headquarters. You'll spend an 8-hour day running around Sierra's hallways - peering into every office, cabinet, computer, and photo album you come across - if it's not nailed down, pick it up! You won't walk away knowing everything, but you will gain tremendous insight into Sierra's process - viewing development up close and personal - and in stunning detail. This is the vision for the Art of Sierra - a tome filled with stories, magic, and memories from the very people that brought the games to market.

Supporters & Contributors
Most material contributions fit in one of two categories: Physical Loaned Items or Sharing of Memories. Both have equal importance in the book, and we'll take a look at how those are accomplished.
Whether you have stacks of design documents, colored art boards, or large props from Sierra's adventures, we'll help you pack and ship the items to us to archive digitally, and return them at no expense to you.
Packaging & Shipping your items
We recommend double boxing your items, and placing them in plastic zip
bags to protect them from potential moisture and crushing during shipment. We've round-tripped many packages, and have had zero issues to-date. We have a variety of shipping carriers to choose from, and we'll cover any charges. Please contact us to make arrangements.
Documenting your items
Once we receive your items, they will be tagged and inventoried into our
system prior to digital archiving. This insures that your items are safely
tracked throughout the process. For flat small to medium sized items we utilize a large flatbed scanner to generate files with calibrated settings to insure proper balance, color rendition, and reproduction. We handle all pre-press, including de-screening print items in preparation for design import. For larger dimensional items, we'll shoot in our professional studio on either white or black seamless paper, with lighting to render the item appropriately for display in the book.
Returning your items
After carefully capturing your items digitally, we will often create custom
envelopes or portfolios for your items - serving as excellent display pieces while housing them for their journey home. This is a small way of saying thank you for trusting us with your articles. We will ship the items with the same packaging and care as you did to our location, and provide you with tracking information.
Let us know how you work best and what you're most comfortable doing. We have made the preservation process as relaxed and rewarding as possible and we think you will be pleased. Currently, we offer the following methods of capturing your stories:
We will establish a dialogue with you over email to gather your stories together. A combination of asking you relevant questions that will help frame sections of the book as well as an open forum for you to just reflect and reminisce. We feel quite certain there are stories you have that might warrant a whole chapter!
If typing isn't your style, we can arrange for one or multiple phone interviews at your leisure. As in the email interview, we can ask you specific questions based on your relationship with the company, or just open our listening ear as you recall stories and details of interest.
If you need helping jogging your memory, we can give you easy access to our archival server where you can browse a list of Sierra products and topics, and comment directly on items that jog a memory. Pictures are sometimes worth a thousand words, and both pictures and words are vital to this book!

When will 'The Art of Sierra' be released?
As soon as possible! (When it's ready?) High quality books of this magnitude come only with patience and attention to detail. When it is released, we guarantee you will forget the wait.
Why can't I scan or photograph my own items?
Capturing photographs and artwork for an archival-quality book is a detailed and painstaking process. Every item must be catalogued in a consistent manner to result in images that are cohesive and in harmony with the design.
Only the best large format scanners and high resolution camera, lenses, and lighting equipment are used for this project.
What about credit?
Credit is your choice. If you want to be recognized for your contribution, we'll shout it to the mountaintops - in the book, and online. If you choose to remain anonymous, we will respect your privacy. We've done it both ways to date.
What are the legalities involved?
Sierra On-Line Inc. intellectual property is currently owned by Activision / Blizzard Entertainment. The Art of Sierra Project has established communication with the internal publication team - the same team responsible for quality books showcasing properties like World of Warcraft, Kung Fu-Panda, and Man of Steel. Both teams have a mutual interest and history with projects highlighting the creative process of well-respected properties. We anticipate a smooth release down the road. The Art of Sierra team is actively engaging in legal counsel as we continue to privately archive materials for eventual public consumption.
